Now That's What I Call Jury Duty

Thursday's the day to go for jury duty; at least at the Vista court house.  I checked in at 7:45 and they released us from service around 11-ish.  There were only 3 trials on the docket, and none of them needed jury members...at least for today.

So my duty is served for another year.  I'd actually like to get picked for a jury one of these times.  Last couple of times I was holding my breath because a 5-7 day trial would have really put a pinch in my schedule.  But right now that wouldn't have been the case, and I'd truly like to have the experience. I did serve on a General Courts Martial once, but that's not quite the same thing.

But today was about as painless a way to check the block as there could be.  California's civic obligation is "1 trial or 1 day" each year, so my 1 day served today is good for 1 year.  The downside though was that with a big chunk of the day still left, I felt I should go into the office.  So I did.

But I also carved out some time to get a run in.  I chose to run in the gym, on the treadmill, because it's kind of warm outside and I wanted to make up the intervals workout I had planned for, but missed, yesterday.  It was hard.  But it was a good hard, and I'm still kind of revving from it now, an hour later.

I did 8 sets of 880s, at my Yasso pace of 7-minute mile, or 3:30 per 880.  I took a recovery walk/jog for 440 in between each one.  It was kind of fun to track my heart rate on each set and my recovery heart rate on the intervals.  I ran with no incline ("cheater") and the speed set to 8.6 on each segment, which is just seconds under a 7:00 pace.

Max heart rate on each 880:
1) 153
2) 156
3) 157
4) 160
5) 163
6) 163
7) 164
8) 166

My recovery heart rates elevated accordingly, starting out to under 120 after the first set and eventually stabalizing at about 140 between #7 and #8.  Interesting that the upward drift stalled and plateaued from #5-7.  Also interesting that even though my heart was racing a little more each time, the relative perceived level of exertion was about the same.  If I hadn't had my HR monitor, I would have been hard pressed to tell the difference between #2  and the runs from #5-#7.   Everything from #2 to #7 felt hard, but not something that would break me.  #8 was hard and I was glad to be done.

I weighed myself at the start, shoes and all.  I wanted to see if I kept up with my water loss during the run.  I began at 149.5.  During the workout, I drank only 16 ozs. of water.  I knew I should have at least doubled that without even checking.  The post-workout weigh-in (shoes, soaking shirt and shorts) was 147.  So even with the 1 lb of water, I'd lost 1.5 lbs.  That's 24 ozs of water.  I promptly, if slowly, replenished 16 ozs of that during my cooldown stretching.

I couldn't resist comparing my weight when weighted down with gear to my weight on the locker room scale wearing nothing.  Post workout and in need of water, I was 144.5.  I'm probably a pound short of water, so my mean weight right now is probably 146. I think that's down a half a pound, midweek, from where I started on Sunday night.  I should be getting close to 16% body fat if that weight is accurate.

I'm not obsessing about weight.  My weight's pretty much ideal, I think.  I just don't like the little bit of flab I have around the waist and on the abs, and that's probably about 3-4 lbs of fat.  I've dropped 3 since I started on the cholesterol-reduction effort.  Another 3 more, without losing any muscle mass, would be pretty cool.  And my cholesterol numbers better improve too.  I'm going to freak if they don't budge.
