I wonder if I can participate in all of these:
January 24th: Carlsbad Half Marathon (registered)
March 14th: Black Mountain 15K XTerra Run
March 20th: Black Mountain 7K Summit Run
April 11th: Carlsbad 5000 (registered)
April 25th: La Jolla Half Marathon (registered)
June 6th: San Diego Rock ‘n Roll Marathon (registered)
July 4th: Scripps Ranch 10K
August 15th: America’s Finest City Half Marathon
September 11th: Heartbreak Ridge Half Marathon
October 16th: Buffalo Alley 10K
November 7th: Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure 5K
November 14th: Silver Strand Half Marathon
It'd be fun to revisit this list on November 18th and see how many of them I completed.
I'm kind of a schedule-driven guy, and I like to break plans up into chunks. I don't necessarily want to fixate on only running during this year. I'd like to surf more, skate more, perhaps get a bike and actually start to tour on the road rather than simply spin in a darkened gym studio. But as for my fitness goals, I was thinking about mapping out my general focus this way:
January: focus on Carlsbad Half Marathon final preparation
February: continue to run, shifting focus on marathon endurance and mileage buildup
March: continue building my marathon base but also adding masters swim for the month
April: refocus on running for the La Jolla Half Marathon as part of marathon training plan
May: final preparation for my first marathon: San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon
June: Scale back on running and start another month of masters swim
July: Work on speed + strength training (plus 10K race)
August: Build again on endurance for America's Finest City Half Marathon
September: Either concentrate on speed and strength training + masters swim, or decide on working to complete the Heartbreak Ridge Half Marathon
October: Swim/speed/strength training if not done in September
November: Go for personal best in the Silver Strand Half Marathon, right before 50th birthday
December: Rest and recovery; plan on 2011 and training to qualify for Boston Marathon
Putting this on the record now. It'll be interesting to look back at this in November and compare with what actually transpired.
