Back on the Elliptical

Yesterday's 10-mile run took more of a toll than I would have imagined, even though I felt I ran it easy.  The calves limbered up okay, but my feet hurt and I've been so tired all day.  Sleepy.

Rather than do a light run, I planned to not run at all and get a good swim and some strength training in.  I couldn't find my trunks, so I wound up doing some pumping on the elliptical machine.  I did the 20 minute Fit Test first, which was easy but measured me at a disappointing 40 VO2max.  When I'd done the test in the past, I'd score between 44 and 48.  Not sure why I only came in at 40 today.  I might try that more often and see what the variance is.  Even though it takes 15-20 minutes it's a decent way to warm up.

After that, I did 30 minutes of the "Cross Training 2" profile at a resistance level of 12.  Not too hard.  Heart rate in the upper 130s/low 140s mostly.  I'd like to have one of these machines at home.  I can see myself using it while watching TV, just doing low level "fat burning" instead of sitting still on the couch.  It's been awhile since I used the elliptical, so I'd forgotten how the motion is almost a hybrid between running and cycling.  It was kind of fun, and I appreciated the low impact on the feet and ankles.

I did 3 laps around the upper body weight machines, upping the resistance a notch.  Good workout, but tonight I'm still sleepy.  (Joan grilled up some halibut and salmon...yum.)

I'm taking the kids to Knotts Berry Farm tomorrow, so no gym.  It would normally be a spin/swim day, but I'll work in a run, either in the morning or in the evening.
