A late winter storm is rolling through Southern California, and I'm not the sort (yet) who braves inclement weather to get my run in. I could probably handle a little light rain. Even a little cold. But not wind, and certainly not all three -- cold, windy rain -- together.
So I treadmilled at lunch and logged 6 miles with a few sets of inclines (1 mile at 3%, 1 mile at 6% and 1/2 mile at 10%). I kept the pace on the slow side, but I felt fatigued anyway. I thought I'd be pretty fresh after two days of no running. But I'm not. I'm tired. It might be my diet. I ate a ton of grain foods this past week. I've also indulged in a few more cookies than I should've.
Sleep habit is another area that could improve. I keep telling myself that I should put myself to bed at a decent hour, but I seem to be locked into a midnight-to-6AM ritual. Maybe I'm kidding myself that 6 hours a night is sufficient.
Whatever the reason, now's not the time to be handicapping my energy levels with poor eating and sleeping routines. I'm grateful that I've avoided suffering any nagging injuries. My ankles still complain a little, but nothing like they used to. And I've had no flair ups of other common running pains and aches. Knees feel good. Feet okay. Hip flexors tighten up still, but that's a strength issue and not an injury.
Today was going to be a Miramar loop day with Quin. It's good for him and he says he looks forward to our jaunts around the lake. But the weather is going to cancel those plans, unless there's a break in the wind and rain this evening. Not looking like it. Maybe we'll try again on Friday after school, if he doesn't go with Joan to Henderson.
Quin and I are off to Catalina with his 6th grade class on Monday. I went on this field trip with Bailey 3 years ago. (My! Was that 3 years ago already?) It was a blast. I absolutely loved the opportunity to snorkle and kayak around the coves and inlets. I'm anxious to see how Quin does. We're staying in cabins on the island this time rather than boarding on the boat. That'll be different. We return on Wednesday. I probably won't have the opportunity to run during the trip. I'll ask. It would be cool to go for an hour hike/jog around some of the Catalina trails. I'll bring my shoes just in case.
