It's called the "better part of valor" I think: choosing not to run for my own good.
I'm worried about skipping yet another day of running, but I believe I made a mistake by running yesterday before letting my flu run it's course. The heart rate indication should have raised a bigger red flag. I still don't feel right, so I'm going to rest for another day and see how it goes tomorrow.
The San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon course has been published. I mapped it for myself. I don't like the looks of the long 3-mile hill climb between 8 and 11 miles from downtown back up to Balboa and Hillcrest. I'm kind of disappointed the course doesn't follow more of the harbor or go out to the coastline of Pacific Beach. I've read some middling comments about the course from years' past. I'll have to go back and compare. One of the criticisms was the sideways slant of 163 going through the Balboa Park area. That hasn't changed, so I guess that'll still be a complaint. With my ankles, that could be a bother for me too.
I thought I'd discovered a clever way to self-massage my legs. I liked this thing called "The Stick" that I saw and tried out at the Carlsbad event expo. I figured a rolling pin would work similarly, and I've been using one lately, particularly on my hamstrings. Turns out, I'm not so original afterall. Using a rolling pin appears to be actually quite common. I guess that's just an example of convergent invention.
Something new I just picked up on was the use of Pedialyte for electrolyte replenishment by endurance athletes. I read about this in Dean Karnazes's "Ultramarathoner" book. Apparently, if you can stomach the taste and consistency, it's better than Gatorade and other sports drinks at restoring blood chemistry balance after dehydration. I think this is a problem for me since I'm very prone to dehydration, and I think I've experienced the symptoms of low sodium as a result. Whenever it is that I wind up getting myself a hydration belt of some kind, I'll probably turn to Pedialyte and see if that works for me...unless Cytomax or Ultima are more cost effective.
Tomorrow is the last Friday of the month, which means Maranatha's track will be open for lap running in the morning. I don't know why, but I've been looking forward to this. I hope I'm strong enough to run by then.
