I'm committed now. I signed up for the San Diego R'nR marathon on Wednesday. The fee goes up in February and they offer a $13 discount if you sign up on the 13th of the month. (It's the event's 13th anniversary.) I was intending to wait until after the half marathon next weekend and evaluate whether I felt like I was ready to make the next step, but I decided to be confident and take advantage of the savings.
So now, my plan is to focus on the Carlsbad run and get through that. I'll spend a week recovering and then begin an 18-week program that will build toward the marathon. Right now, I admit it seems like an insurmountable task; but I know others have done it and I know I already have a decent base. I'm at a good 28-32 miles per week now and already have long runs of 12 miles under my belt.
And now that I've learned the value of training at a pace less than my expected HM and M paces, I'm actually looking forward to increasing my mileage. Hard to believe. Strange how a 6 or 8 mile run now seems like a short to moderate distance. I know there's a major physical component to distance training, but I have a big psychological hurdle to overcome. I think I'm doing it, and enjoying the process too.
I haven't run yet today. I've got a schedule treadmill routine planned as outlined yesterday. I hope to be doing that shortly. The family is driving up to the Anaheim/Costa Mesa area tonight to get Bailey to a summer intensive audition. We leave around 3PM and we'll be staying the night and spending most of Saturday up there. If I don't get my run in today before we leave, the hotel has a fitness center which I assume will have a treadmill. Saturday is a no-workout day and I plan to spend the day with Quin while Joan and Bailey go to the 2nd audition.
Sunday, the Chargers face the Jets. Go Bolts!
